Finalising Album
-
Hi Joel,
I feel so out of the loop with my album production. I made another super cool track but I've now done nothing production wise for a few weeks. Thinking I should book another session with you soon to get back on track, and look over the mixing on your gran turismo track like we discussed. What do you think?
Have you ever felt really out of sync with your process for a few weeks and then found it daunting to open the DAW and keep working on tracks again? Any advice? I'm scared to come back to a track and end up ruining it because I'm not in that larger 'flow' state where I remember how to pick things up across the span of the days I'm working on it.
I got a drum machine and have a sequencer on the way, so I finally have the ability to go dawless for fun once everything has arrived, but I've been so caught up in the excitement of it that I haven't opened ableton unless I'm practicing my keyboard playing :c
Poor me right!!
I also increasingly feel the need to wrap up all the tracks I have for my album at this point. I think I have 6 or 7 of them, all basically finished. Only problem is the DAUNTING part - giving them all a final polish, making sure all the transitions are nice, adding little pieces of ear candy, finalising the mixes, masters, etc. I've always been really good at finishing projects up to the 80% mark but I'm now reaching the 20% polish I'm not used to and crapping my pants. Really struggling to bridge the gap.
Time to go deep into my problems finishing this thing in our next call. I've been gliding along, again, because the 80% is known to me. At this point I have enough and need to stop putting off thoughts of getting it finished. SO SCARED!
Hope you've been well and I appreciate the help and your input as always.
Cheers,
John

Hi John!
What youre feeling is totally normal. Sometimes you just need take a moment to step back and reset, thats perfectly fine to do. Im actually going through this right now myself, while I'm keeping occupied with other projects / work / life. Its good and normal to take a step back every once in a while. I've never found it helps to power through it, I tend just listen to how I feel and let that guide me. If I open up a sessions and shits not going right, I just close it immediately. No point in trying to force it, it comes or it doesnt. I wrote about this actually in a post:

You just got to feel it out. You know yourself better than anyone and you know when at what conditions you do your best work in. When youre unsure, just remember that.
Dont worry about polish, thats the easy part lol. I'll walk you through a few of my projects and show you how I approach things to make it simple.
Lets definitely set up a session. Im pretty slammed this weekend but I have time next week if you do. Pick a day that works best for you, and we'll make it happen. If anything changes I'll let you know.
Congrats on the new gear btw! What did you end up getting?

I'll check out that post now and get a session booked for sometime soon, I appreciate the advice

I got a fairly well priced second-hand Elektron Analog Rytm MK2 and I have an Oxi One MK2 sequencer on the way. It's nice to have some gear that isn't falling apart now, though I did manage to solder a new working button onto my Blofeld. Going to be a lot of fun jamming with the Monologue and the Blofeld. I've been baffled by the capabilities of the Analog Rytm too, it feels like an extension of my brain!!

++ Love the 'two things can be true at once' blog too. Don't know how I missed it when you posted it! Very real and important message. Is there a way to subscribe to the blogs?

John! I'm so sorry I missed our session today, I was dealing with legal residency paperwork today that needed to be done asap and couldn't get back home in time. Are you available tomorrow? If not, I do any other day except Wednesday as I have to travel again.
I apologize again, will make it up to you! - J
