Session #3 Notes!

Val! Great session yesterday, seriously impressed with the effort you put into your track!

This morning I took several listens to the track, here are my follow up notes:

Your arrangement feels very solid. You did a great job of balancing tension and release throughout the track while keeping everything moving forward and at no point did it feel repetitive or lacking in energy. This is probably one of the hardest things to get right when arranging and you handled it like a pro so hats off to you. Well done!  

Your choices for sounds / samples are excellent. Everything sounded and felt cohesive, nothing stood out that felt like it shouldn't be there which is also great. As I said before, your track sounds like it could have easily been released at peak era for the genre so fantastic work again.

On a more granular level, these are a few things I noticed which we talk discuss in our next session:

Overall, your mix is good. Your broad frequency range is represented fully and no hard dips or peaks throughout the track. I did notice some phasing issues throughout the intro due to too much stereo width on some of the sounds. Not a big deal as this is something that can be adjust easily, but something to be aware of. The remainder of the track does a great job of keeping things in phase. There are some minor masking and level adjust tweaks that can be made to add a little more clarity to the overall mix.

At this point, the next step to make any final adjustments to the arrangement and mix that want so we can prepare the track for final mixing and mastering. If you feel comfortable doing so, once you have your version of a final mix, you can export each of the individual tracks as stems and I can do an adjustment mix to tighten anything that needs adjusting. Once thats done, we can go over the mix one more time and if you're happy with it, I can do the mastering for you.

Awesome work once again! You should be really proud of this one, its a great track and the energy is fantastic. Bravo!

I can't find online the exact pack for the little sounds I used, but this has the same name so I'm pretty sure it's this one.

They were in a folder called Glitch Technology (Samplephonics). Two other sounds were from Big Fish Alien Guitars.

Yesterday I spent some time finalizing little details for the arrangement. Slightly automated the acid sound and added a reverse clap fx in some key points. Can't really do much with the acid line because it clashes with the bass jumping up and down. Added some fade outs as well where I thought necessary.

Tomorrow I can send the .zip file with stems if you like. I also tried to make the drone pad more monoish, but I think there are still phasing issues; never understood quite well how to fix those. Usually, when I ran into those, I'd just change the sound or start it from scratch again. This was a drone from either Omnisphere or Kontakt with some automation and probably a few layers on top, and bounced it a long time ago. Also, I'm pretty sure the drone and the bass clash towards the ending; around 100 Hz. At least you can still hear both...

Man, I didnt even know Samplephonics was still around. I remember they used to release a ton of really great libraries. Big Fish as well... Bill Laswell had a ton of sample libraries released through them that I used to use... sort of leftfield, found sound, tribal percussion stuff that was really different.
