John! I posted on AS earlier but just wanted to say here as well very nice work. Industrial breaks isnt something I hear a lot these days but you do it very well

Just out of curiosity, I notice your latest releases are in the 3 to 4 minute range. No criticism, just wondering if that's something you're consciously aiming for or if it just feels like where the tracks need to end. I'm writing an article about track lengths so I'm gathering info

@aymat I very much appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you like it!

I definitely never aim for any particular length. I have been thinking I ought to make some longer songs recently but I'm trying not to worry about it just yet. 

When I sit down and start creating a track my main aim is to translate whatever pain I feel in my life into audio. I find that the most important parts of whatever I feel are already dealt with by the time I reach 3/4 minutes. Then I can go on living my life as normal for usually ~3 ish days until I encounter another feeling which feels important enough to capture.

TL:DR; I go with what feels natural, but once I make an album / adapt my existing songs to an album I definitely want to try extend track lengths.

Makes absolute sense and you definitely dont need to worry about it. As long as it feels right to you, stick with your gut.  

I've just been curious about it recently, not just in my own productions but speaking with other session members. I know we all have our own innate sense of what feels right for how long a track should be, and I've always followed my instincts in that regard. Coming from the older dj side of things, I was always used to longer 7 min-ish length tracks on vinyl releases, which incidentally was also in part due to a kind of a weird production thing from back in the day when they would extend the end of a track with 16 or 32 bars of either just the beat or some atmospheric element so djs could have enough time to mix into the next track. That pretty much stopped being a thing once digital came into play but it's just a funny thing that existed at one point in time. Now I personally feel like anywhere between the 5 to 7 min mark feels about right to get all the main elements in the structure for how I like to arrange.

It'll be a few weeks before I get it done but I think it'll maker for an interesting article. Lots on my plate atm but will definitely send it your way once its ready

gah true I bet mixing stuff on vinyl was a real pain in the ass... 

I have a real soft spot for EXTREMELY long repetitive songs that just take you away from this world completely. Definitely want to make some 10/15 minute tracks once I get a more powerful machine

i've also had a really bloody good time making 5-7 minute tracks but life is too stressful right now for me to sit in the vibe of a track for that long sadly

Definitely a commitment   but honestly its arbitrary at this point. Trends seem to have some affect on release lengths but in the end it just boils down to how you feel and what serves the track.

This is my go to... its a full album that feels like one giant track lol
